I've been very interested in the design of the Beijing Olympic Park, It seems like they are going great lengths to create dramatic impact and sustainable venues
But I have a question about this building "The Watercube"
sports.yahoo.com/olympics/news
Specifically the outer material used on this building; it states:
" The outside skin is made of the Teflon-like material known as ETFE, or ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene. Composed of two layers, it's separated by an interior passage that allows the building to breathe like a greenhouse. "
How energy efficient would this be? Wouldn't it trap too much heat? What does it mean by breathing? Is this material "green"
how easy is it to recycle---Just so many questions
I appreciate your expert opinion.

Re: Beijing's Watercube
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 5:46 PMI'm no expert but I would assume this is similar in design to a DOUBLE ENVELOPE design where the inner layer is an ACTIVE airflow . The insulating characteristics of this design are phenomenal.
My friend built his house on the coast of Maine utilizing this design and he heats with only an airtight wood stove in the basement and a flagstone fireplace in the livingroom. He is a mason so he built his flagstone bathtub against the back wall of the fireplace so the tub water stays hot for hours if there's a fire in the livingroom. -
